Turkmen spelling and script

Turkmen is written in a modified Latin alphabet that is official in Turkmenistan, with letters such as ç, ä, ž, ň, ö, ş, ü and ý. Earlier Turkmen was written in Arabic script and, during the Soviet period, in Cyrillic, which is why older documents look different.

Because these letters change the name, copy the spelling from the card exactly, or choose the simplified form on the name page when the letter is not available to you.

How a full Turkmen name is written

Turkmen surnames often end in -ow / -owa (from the Russian-era -ov / -ova), and official papers can also give the father's name with -oğlu / -gyzy.

Surnames often end in -ow or -owa, the Turkmen spelling of the Russian-era -ov and -ova. Official papers can also give the father's name with -oğlu or -gyzy, and the generator can show the father's name as a second name.

  • Surname -ow / -owa: e.g. Rejepow, Rejepowa.
  • Given name + father's name: The father's name follows the given name, as in older papers.

Practice varies by family, country and period.

Using the generator for Turkmen names

  • Use the Label filter to choose between Editorial and Documented names; most of the Turkmen collection is our own research.
  • Open a name to see the variants, since Turkmen spellings sometimes differ between sources.
  • Switch on Show a full name to try the -ow / -owa surname form.

Practical tips for Turkmen parents

Check letters such as ä, ž, ň and ý with the registry where the birth is recorded; some systems replace them with plain letters.

If the family also speaks Turkish, look for names on both lists; a shared name keeps the Turkmen spelling here.

Ask grandparents about older forms: Arabic-script and Cyrillic spellings were used within living memory.

What to keep in mind about Turkmen data

  • The Turkmen list is shorter than the Turkish one because we add a name only when we can state its meaning.
  • Most meanings are labelled Editorial, so read the name page for the reasoning and for what is not yet confirmed.

Questions and answers

How do Turkmen surnames work?

Surnames often end in -ow or -owa. The convention option can also add the father's name as a second name.

Why is the list shorter than Turkish?

We add a name only when we can state its meaning. The collection grows as more names are researched.

Where can I see the sources?

Each name page says whether its meaning is Documented, Likely or Editorial and lists its sources where it has any.

Which alphabet do you use?

The current Latin alphabet of Turkmenistan. Cyrillic and Arabic-script forms are not part of the generator.

Why are most Turkmen names labelled Editorial?

Few Turkmen names have a published etymology we can cite, so our researched meanings fill the gap and are labelled Editorial. When a source appears, the label is upgraded.

What does the letter ý stand for?

It represents the y sound as in the English word yes, and it must be kept in the spelling.

Can a Turkmen name be recorded abroad?

Many registries can record the special letters or an agreed replacement. Check the rules of the registry where the birth is recorded.
