Uyghur Baby Name Generator

Uyghur given names draw on three streams: native Turkic words, a large body of Arabic names, and Persian names and elements. The generator below picks from names that are recorded for Uyghur in our database, and shows the Uyghur Arabic spelling next to the Latin one wherever we have it.

Many Uyghur names are glossed in the Dictionary of Uyghur Names, which we cite and translate; other entries come from our editorial research and are labelled as such on their pages.

What is in the Uyghur collection

Our Uyghur collection holds 6,733 names with a recorded meaning: 2,480 girls' names, 3,407 boys' names and 25 used for both. 6,634 carry the Documented label, 0 Likely and 99 Editorial. The themes that occur most often are leadership and nobility, beauty and faith and devotion. By origin, the largest groups are Arabic, Persian and Turkic. 532 of the names are also documented in at least one other language, most often Turkish, Azerbaijani and Kazakh.

Uyghur spelling and script

Uyghur names have three common written forms. The Arabic-based Uyghur script is the original and is official in Xinjiang; it writes every vowel, including letters such as ې, ۆ and ۈ, and marks a word-initial vowel with ئ. Outside China you will also meet Uyghur Latin (ULY), which is widespread online and in Western countries, and Uyghur Cyrillic, which is still used in Central Asia.

On every card below the Latin spelling follows ULY, and the Uyghur Arabic form is shown next to it when we have one. A name written Gülnur in ULY can appear as Gulnur or Gyulnur in other systems, so treat the Latin line as one reading of the original, not as the only correct spelling.

How a full Uyghur name is written

Traditionally Uyghurs have no fixed family surname: the father's given name often serves as the second name (Dilnur Tursun). Uyghurs in Central Asia and the diaspora also use Russian-style -ov / -ova endings.

Because there is no fixed family surname in the traditional system, the second name is usually the father's given name. A girl called Dilnur whose father is Tursun is Dilnur Tursun; her brother would be, for example, Ilham Tursun. The Russian-style -ov and -ova endings are an additional pattern used mainly where Uyghurs live in the former Soviet Union.

  • Given name + father's name: The father's given name as the second name, e.g. Dilnur Tursun.
  • Russian-style -ov / -ova: Used by Uyghurs in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, e.g. Tursunov.

Practice varies by family, country and period.

Practical tips for Uyghur parents

If your family lives outside China, decide which Latin spelling you will use on documents before the birth, and keep the Arabic-script form as the reference. Registry offices in Germany, Turkey or the United States will transliterate in their own way unless you supply a spelling.

Many Uyghur names come from Arabic or Persian, and the same name can be familiar to Kazakh, Uzbek or Turkish families. Use the Used across languages filter if you want a name that relatives from other communities will recognise.

Write the name in both scripts for your own records, and ask older relatives how they say it. Pronunciation of long vowels and of the sounds written ڭ and ғ differs by region.

What to keep in mind about Uyghur data

  • The Uyghur collection is the largest in our data because we import the Dictionary of Uyghur Names, but its meanings are glosses quoted from that dictionary and translated by us.
  • The Latin spelling is generated by a fixed table from the Arabic-script form; where a family uses another Latin system the spelling will differ.

Questions and answers

Are these real Uyghur names?

Yes. The generator never builds names from syllables. Every result is an entry in our database that is recorded for Uyghur, with its meaning, origin and sources on its own page.

Which spelling should I use?

The Uyghur Arabic spelling is the original form. The Latin spelling shown is a transliteration (ULY, a Latin Uyghur system), and other Latin spellings exist. Each name page lists the variants we know.

How does a full Uyghur name work?

There is no fixed family surname in the traditional system; the father's given name often follows the child's. Families abroad may use Russian-style -ov and -ova endings. The convention option in the generator shows both patterns.

Where do the Uyghur meanings come from?

Mostly from the Dictionary of Uyghur Names, an MIT-licensed dataset. We quote its Uyghur gloss and add an English translation that is marked as ours. Other entries come from Wiktionary or our own research and carry the matching label.

Which Latin spelling system do you use?

ULY, the Uyghur Latin Yéziqi, converted by a fixed table from the Arabic-script spelling. The name page lists other Latin spellings that are in use.

Can I search by the Arabic-script spelling?

Yes. Search the name in Uyghur Arabic script and the matching page opens, with the same label and sources.

Are there names shared with other Turkic peoples?

Many. A name that is documented in several languages shows each language's spelling on its page, and the filter Used in 3+ languages lists them together.

Why does the Latin spelling sometimes differ from what I have seen?

Several Latin systems exist for Uyghur, and spellings such as Gülnur, Gulnur and Gyulnur circulate. We show ULY and list the others on the name page.
