Tool
Compare Turkic Names Side by Side
When a short list gets down to two or three names, the differences that matter are usually small: one means something slightly different, one is recorded for more languages, one is easier to write on a form. This page puts up to three published names into a single table so those differences are visible at a glance, with the same facts our name pages use.
Type names into the three fields, or open the page from your shortlist or from a name page, and read across the rows. Only rows that have data for at least one of the names are shown, and a dash means our data says nothing for that cell.

What the comparison does and who it is for
The table has up to 8 rows: meaning with its label, origin, the languages the name is documented in, gender, length, spellings, variants and related names, and the number of sources. It is for parents who have narrowed a list and want to see the finalists together, for relatives who disagree about a spelling, and for anyone who is curious how two similar names differ.
It compares recorded facts. It does not rank the names, it does not recommend one, and it does not predict how a name will be received. The decision stays with you; the table only removes the need to open three pages and remember what each one said.
How to use it, step by step
- Type a name into each field. Suggestions appear as you type, and you can also paste a spelling in Latin, Cyrillic or Arabic script. For example, Mahisiyma, Semeray and Qamar all share the moon theme.
- Press Compare. The page reloads with a shareable address that lists the names, so you can send the exact comparison to someone else.
- Read across a row to compare one fact, or down a column to read one name. The column header links to the full name page.
- Use the bookmark in a column header to save a name to your shortlist, or open the shortlist to compare a different set.
- Change a field and compare again. You can compare one name on its own to see its facts in a compact table.
How the rows are chosen
Every value comes from the published entry of the name. The meaning row shows the first published meaning with its label: Documented means a cited source states it, Likely means it is composed from sourced parts or plausible, and Editorial means it comes from our own research and has no cited source yet. The origin row shows the recorded origin label and the first statement of the entry.
The languages row lists the languages in which the name is documented, which is different from where the name is merely heard. The gender row shows the classification of the entry and notes where a language records a different gender. The length row gives the number of letters in the main Latin spelling and an approximate syllable count taken from groups of vowels.
The spellings row shows one stored spelling for each script and language, preferring native spellings over romanizations, with the correct language and text direction for Arabic script. The variants row adds variant spellings, the elements the name is built from and the names our entries relate to it. The sources row counts the references listed on the name page.
What the comparison cannot do
- It cannot say which name is better. A larger number of languages or sources says something about documentation, not about taste.
- Names that are not published yet cannot be compared, and a typed spelling that matches no published name is reported as not found.
- Syllable counts are approximate and the length row only counts letters of the main Latin spelling.
- Rows with no data for any compared name are hidden, so two comparisons can show different rows.
- The table shows at most three names. For a longer list use the shortlist page.
Practical tips for parents
Compare names of the same gender and rough length first, then look at what differs: a name documented in several languages is easier to explain to a wider family, while a name documented in one language may be more distinctive within it.
Read the label before the meaning. If two names have attractive meanings but only one is Documented, open the sources of the other to see how firm the claim is, and check the correction page if you know better.
Write the finalists with the surname and read the result aloud. The full name preview tool shows initials, length and syllables for the whole name, and the sibling finder shows names that go with an older child.
Names to compare
Mahisiyma, Semeray and Qamar are published names with a moon theme, a good first comparison because their meanings are close but their languages and spellings differ. Open the comparison from the link in the tool or compare any other set you like.

Questions and answers
How many names can I compare?
Up to three at a time. The page ignores any further names in the address so that the table stays readable on a phone.
Can I type a spelling in another script?
Yes. The fields use the same search as the rest of the site, so a Cyrillic or Arabic-script spelling that is stored for a name will find it.
Why do some rows disappear?
A row is shown only when at least one of the compared names has data for it. Within a shown row, a dash means that name has no data for that cell.
Does a bigger number of sources mean a better name?
No. It only shows how many references the entry cites. Names with an Editorial label can be perfectly good names whose meaning we have not yet linked to a source.
Is my comparison saved anywhere?
The names you type are in the web address, nothing is stored in an account, and we do not log the comparison. Your shortlist stays in your own browser.
Can I share the comparison?
Yes. After you press Compare, copy the address from the browser. It lists the names, so anyone who opens it sees the same table.
Why is the page not indexed by search engines when names are selected?
Each combination of names is a personal view rather than a page of its own, so we ask search engines not to index it. The empty tool page stays indexable.
Data & methodology
The table reads published entries only: meanings, origins, language usage, forms and relations with their editorial status checked at the time of the request. Nothing is calculated except the letter count and the approximate syllable count.
The meaning label is derived from the sources attached to the meaning claim, with the same rule as in the name lists. Counts of sources are the references shown on the name page.
