Uyghur Names: Meanings, Origins & Traditions

Uyghur names on this site are shown first in the Uyghur Arabic alphabet, written right to left, exactly as recorded in our sources, followed by the Latin romanization where a source gives one. Uyghur naming draws on native Turkic words (for example words for the moon, light or bravery) as well as a large stock of Arabic and Persian names and elements. How Uyghur names are written

The Uyghur Arabic alphabet is the official script in Xinjiang. It writes all vowels, including ې, ۆ, ۈ and ئ-initial forms, which makes it closer to pronunciation than many other Arabic-based scripts. Uyghur Latin (ULY) is common online and in Western countries, and Uyghur Cyrillic is still used in Central Asia. Latin forms on this site are labelled with the system they follow.
