Bashkir spelling and script

Bashkir Cyrillic took its current form in 1938 and adds letters such as ҙ, ҫ, ҡ, ғ, ң, ә, ө and ү. Before the middle of the 19th century Bashkir speakers wrote in Arabic script, and these older forms survive only in historical documents.

The letters ҙ and ҫ have no Tatar equivalent, so a name that looks the same in Tatar and Bashkir can be pronounced and written differently. The card shows the Bashkir spelling when we have it.

How a full Bashkir name is written

A Bashkir full name on official papers is usually a given name plus a surname in -ov or -ova, while the father's name as a middle name survives in some families.

In documents Russian-style -ov and -ova endings are common, and the father's name as a second name is the older custom. The generator can show either with a real father's name from the Bashkir list.

  • Surname -ov / -ova: e.g. Azamatov.
  • Given name + father's name: The father's name as a middle name, as some families still do.

Practice varies by family, country and period.
