Uzbek Names: Meanings, Origins & Traditions

Uzbek names are listed here in the Uzbek Latin alphabet, reintroduced officially in 1993, and in Cyrillic where a source records that form. Uzbek and Uyghur are both Karluk languages, and many names have related forms in the two languages, but this site only links them when a source does. Arabic and Persian names are frequent, and Uzbek spellings often show their own vowels, for example Oybek beside Kazakh and Kyrgyz Айбек (Aybek).

How Uzbek names are written

Uzbekistan reintroduced a Latin alphabet in 1993, alongside the Cyrillic alphabet used since 1940, and both remain in everyday use. Letters with apostrophe-like marks, oʻ and gʻ, are part of the spelling. Uzbeks in Afghanistan and some in China write in Arabic-based scripts.
