Azerbaijani Baby Name Generator

Azerbaijani is closely related to Turkish and many names are shared, but the Azerbaijani Latin alphabet has its own letters, such as ə, so the spelling can differ from the Turkish form.

Our Azerbaijani collection holds 601 names with a recorded meaning: 246 girls' names, 344 boys' names and 10 used for both. 286 carry the Documented label, 0 Likely and 315 Editorial. The themes that occur most often are leadership and nobility, flowers and beauty. By origin, the largest groups are Arabic, Persian and Turkic. 380 of the names are also documented in at least one other language, most often Turkish, Uyghur and Bashkir.

Azerbaijani spelling and script

Azerbaijan returned from Cyrillic to Latin in 1991, and the Azerbaijani Latin alphabet has its own letters, among them ə, ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş and ü. In Iran, Azerbaijani is written in Arabic script, and in Dagestan in Russia Cyrillic is still used; this site shows the Latin forms of Azerbaijan.

The letter ə has no Turkish counterpart, so a name that Turkish spells with e may be written with ə in Azerbaijani. Search ignores the difference, but the cards keep the recorded spelling.

How a full Azerbaijani name is written

In Azerbaijan the father's name is written with oğlu (son of) or qızı (daughter of) after the given name, and surnames often end in -ov / -ova (spelled -yev / -yeva after a vowel).

The father's name goes after the given name with oğlu (son of) or qızı (daughter of): Anar Rəşid oğlu. Surnames often end in -ov or -ova, and -yev or -yeva after a vowel, a pattern that dates from the Russian-era documents.

  • Father's name + oğlu / qızı: Anar Rəşid oğlu: given name, then the father's name with oğlu or qızı.
  • Surname -ov / -ova: e.g. Rəşidov.

Practice varies by family, country and period.

Using the generator for Azerbaijani names

  • Switch the language to compare: the Turkish generator and this one share names, and each shows its own spelling.
  • Use Show a full name to choose between the oğlu / qızı form and the -ov / -ova surname.
  • Filter by Persian or Arabic origin to see how large that layer is among Azerbaijani names.

Practical tips for Azerbaijani parents

Documents in Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia may write the same name three ways. Keep a record of the Latin spelling and one native-script form, and use the Latin form consistently abroad.

If you want a name that is easy to say in Turkish too, look at the Used across languages filter and at the spelling lines on each page.

Remember the patronymic when you read the full name aloud: the child's given name, the father's name and the ending.

What to keep in mind about Azerbaijani data

  • We show Azerbaijani only in Latin; Arabic-script forms used in Iran are not yet part of the data.
  • The collection is smaller than the Turkish one, and gender is shown as recorded for Azerbaijani.
